# Seasonal Tune-Ups Reduce Costs

You wouldn’t let your car go a year without an oil change or a tune-up, or not go to the doctor for a yearly check-up… So why would you let your heating and cooling systems go a year without filter changes or tune-ups? # Change Your Air Filters Regularly

Check your air filters monthly. If your filter looks dirty, change it. A dirty filter will slow down airflow and make your system work harder to keep the temperature set on your thermostat satisfied—wasting energy. A clean filter will prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system—leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure. The blue filter on the right is clean and new. # Have Your Heating and Cooling Ducts Sealed

Ducts that move air to-and-from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent—and sometimes much more.

Focus first on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage. We use metal-backed (foil) tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts. After sealing the ducts in those spaces, we wrap them in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.
