Money Saving Tips
Making smart decisions on your home’s heating, air conditioning, and ventilation have huge effects on your utility bills- since about half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Follow these easy steps to increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling system(s).
# Seasonal Tune-Ups Reduce Costs
You wouldn’t let your car go a year without an oil change or a tune-up, or not go to the doctor for a yearly check-up… So why would you let your heating and cooling systems go a year without filter changes or tune-ups? After all, your furnace and A/Cs are the most expensive appliances in your home or workplace. Wouldn’t you like to keep them around for awhile? Maintain your equipment to prevent future problems and unwanted costs.

# Change Your Air Filters Regularly
Check your air filters monthly. If your filter looks dirty, change it. A dirty filter will slow down airflow and make your system work harder to keep the temperature set on your thermostat satisfied—wasting energy. A clean filter will prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system—leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure. The blue filter on the right is clean and new. If your system is working properly, then your filter will look like the dirty, used one on the left. Don’t want to worry about monthly filter changes, or don’t know where to purchase air filters? # Install a Programmable Thermostat
Want to save on average 20% a year on energy costs? Having a programmable thermostat installed can do just that. A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from their home or office during set periods of time. The key of a programmable thermostat is so it will reduce heating and cooling when it is less necessary—automatically! Ask one of our technicians if you are interested in a new thermostat. # Have Your Heating and Cooling Ducts Sealed
Ducts that move air to-and-from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent—and sometimes much more.
Focus first on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage. We use metal-backed (foil) tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts. After sealing the ducts in those spaces, we wrap them in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.
Next, we look to seal any other ducts that you can access in the heated or cooled part of the house. Call today to schedule to have your ducts sealed to improve unnecessary energy waste!
Properly maintain your cooling and heating systems to avoid an outage during peak season!
